Department of Mathematical Physics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Physics!

Note: As part of the reconfiguration of the University web pages, the official Department web pages will in the future be at Those pages are currently under construction and do not yet contain links to all information on these pages, but may contain more up-to-date information on some topics. A redirect will be put in when the migration is complete.

We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in theoretical physics. In addition, we teach mathematical methods for engineers. You can find more information about the courses we offer on our course pages.

The department's research interests lie in various areas of theoretical and mathematical physics, including elementary particle physics and quantum field theory, dynamical systems, classical and quantum chaos, and quantum information science. More information about our current research interests is available from our research pages or from the home pages of the individual staff members.

Particle physics masterclasses

The international Particle Physics Masterclasses will be hosted by the Mathematical Physics Department, Tuesday 15 March 2016. More information, including about how to register, can be found at the Masterclasses web page.
